Alarm system upgrade (retrofit)

App control, modern IP or mobile signal transmission and smart home integration for your existing alarm – keeping old detectors and, if usable, the panel.

Existing older alarm keypad and intercom

Keep your old alarm – and finally control it from an app, get notifications on your phone and link it to your smart home

A wired alarm system that is 10–20 years old isn’t bad just because it’s old. Wired motion and opening detectors can last a long time, the cabling is already in the walls, and the control panel does its job. What’s often missing is up-to-date ease of use and communication: there’s no convenient access from your phone, notifications are patchy or non-existent, signal transmission needs updating, and your smart home can’t see the state of the system. In many cases, you can fill this gap without replacing the control panel, with a communication module that connects to the panel’s keypad or system bus.

MindzenSmart (Mindzen Direct Kft.) is a security systems company registered with the Hungarian police (file number: 01110-822/6574-2/2026.SZv.). In Budapest and the surrounding area, we make existing, working alarm systems app-controllable, ready for modern signal transmission and able to integrate with a smart home. For DSC, Paradox, Satel, Texecom and Honeywell Galaxy control panels, we choose a communicator that is compatible with the exact model. The aim is to keep the usable control panel, detectors and cabling, while bringing control, notifications and integration up to today’s standards.

What problem does it solve?

After the upgrade, depending on the capabilities of the chosen control panel and module:

  • the system can be armed and disarmed from your phone, and you can look back through past events
  • you can receive notifications about alarms, arming, faults or power cuts – on several phones
  • old signal transmission can be switched to a modern IP or mobile network connection and, if you wish, connected to alarm monitoring
  • your existing detectors and the alarm's status can become inputs for your smart home
  • for an inherited system, a documented zone layout, user list and settings description can be prepared
  • the control panel, detectors and cabling you have already paid for can stay in use, provided they are in good condition

Let's also be clear about what it doesn't solve: the upgrade renews ease of use and communication, not the level of protection. If a door or window was unprotected before, it stays unprotected after the upgrade; missing points and detectors need to be added separately – which, of course, we can do.

Good to know: in Hungary, only a security company registered with the police may work on alarm systems as a service. With us, smart home expertise and security system installation are in one pair of hands, so we can coordinate the module on the alarm side with the cloud or smart home integration.

Existing alarm panel and siren

Who is this service for?

  • Anyone with an older but well-functioning wired alarm who wants to control it from their phone and see its events
  • Anyone who inherited an alarm when moving in without the code or proper documentation
  • Anyone who is afraid to use their alarm because they worry the loud siren will disturb the neighbours and they can’t switch it off remotely
  • Anyone whose old signal transmitter is outdated and who wants to switch to a modern IP or mobile network connection
  • Smart home owners who want to integrate their existing alarm into their system
  • Offices and shops where the control panel is fine, but opening and closing events and signal transmission need updating

Why can it be worth it? The detectors and cabling of a wired system in good condition can represent significant value. A targeted upgrade instead of full replacement can extend the system’s lifespan while bringing ease of use up to today’s expectations, at a lower cost.

Upgrade, partial expansion or full replacement?

This isn't decided by the age of the system, but by the measured condition of the control panel, detectors and cabling, the number of unprotected points, and any requirements from your insurer or monitoring provider.

Upgrade (retrofit)

Worth it if the control panel and detectors pass testing, the cabling is intact and what's missing is ease of use or communication. It extends the lifespan of the existing hardware.

Partial expansion

The system works, but the property has changed or there are new points to protect. We combine the upgrade and the addition of missing detectors into a single job.

Full replacement

Justified if the control panel or detectors are not in adequate condition, spare parts are no longer available, or the required security grade can't be achieved with the existing system.

What decides the choice? The measured condition, the unprotected points, the required security grade and your integration needs. If there's no clear-cut answer, we give you an itemised quote for more than one option.

What do we survey?

We start with an initial check by phone, based on a photo of the control panel's circuit board, then look at the following on site:

  • The manufacturer, model and firmware version of the control panel
  • The age of the control panel, its free zones and expansion options
  • Whether the installer code and previous documentation are available
  • How the connected zones and detectors work, with a walk test
  • The condition of the control panel's battery, the keypad and the outdoor siren
  • The current method of signal transmission and any existing monitoring contract
  • Ethernet, Wi-Fi and mobile network connection options at the control panel
  • Your existing smart home system and the automation links you want
  • The technical requirements of your insurance policy or monitoring provider

After the photo check, we can usually tell you which solution could work; we only commit to a final solution after the on-site condition survey.

Alarm module in the hallway of a family house

What does the service include?

  1. Initial check by phone and photo: from the control panel model, we identify the possible upgrade routes
  2. Site survey: code access, zone test, battery and detector test, network options
  3. Communication module installation: fitting the compatible module and configuring the control panel as needed
  4. Network connection: separated network access, with only the communication that’s needed and no unnecessary open ports
  5. Signal transmission setup: technical preparation for the chosen alarm monitoring service and communication route
  6. App setup: users, notifications, permissions and training
  7. Smart home integration on request: bringing zone states and arming information into tested automations
  8. Handover documentation: zone list, access details, settings and a description of the work carried out
  9. Optional next steps: connection to alarm monitoring and a maintenance contract

Prices

The final price depends on the control panel model and the matching communicator, the back-up route required, whether the installer code is available or a reset is needed, the number of zones and how well they are documented, the depth of smart home integration, the number of points to be added, and whether you want connection to alarm monitoring.

That's why we always give a tailored quote that fits the condition of your specific system and your actual needs.

Dealing with a lost installer code, resetting and reprogramming are a separate item, priced by number of zones and control panel model. If the control panel has been discontinued and spare parts are no longer available, we quote for a successor panel that lets you keep the usable detectors and cabling.

What do we install for which control panel – and why?

Wherever possible, the communicator works on the control panel's own bus, so it sees not just the state of an external relay but also the system's native events and zones. The exact module always depends on the control panel's sub-type and version.

Scroll or swipe sideways

For VERSA, INTEGRA and some PERFECTA control panels, the manufacturer's own Ethernet or mobile network module (for example the ETHM-1 Plus) can provide app control, signal transmission and an integration link.

For PowerSeries and some other control panels, a keypad bus communicator (for example EnvisaLink) can provide an app, IP-based signal transmission or mobile app access via the cloud. The exact route depends on the panel version.

For SP, MG and EVO control panels, we choose a compatible IP communicator (IP150, IP180) and the cloud connection options based on the hardware and firmware version.

Depending on the control panel model, a factory communicator (ComIP, SmartCom) can make it app-controllable and ready for modern IP or mobile network signal transmission.

For compatible Honeywell Galaxy control panels, we choose the communication solution for app control and modern signal transmission based on the exact model and version.

With newer systems that already have a network connection, the task is more about reviewing settings, signal transmission, access and integration.

With this IP-based system, upgrading can mean sorting out the app, users, signal transmission and smart home connections.

An alarm that also controls your smart home

The alarm's motion and opening detectors can also act as inputs for your smart home. When you arm the alarm, the heating can switch to away mode, the lights can switch off and the cameras can start monitoring their areas. When you disarm it, comfort mode can be restored.

One boundary always applies to integration: the alarm's core operation must not depend on the smart home controller or the internet, and we never link disarming to an unverified automation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which control panel I have?

We need the model and version of the circuit board inside the metal control panel box. If you send us a clear photo of it, we can often tell at the initial check which upgrade routes are possible.

I don’t have the installer code. Is that a problem?

Not always. Many control panels can be reset and reprogrammed, but with a system protected by an installer lock or in an unknown state, this isn’t always possible. We clarify this during the site survey.

Will the system keep its certification compliance after the upgrade?

This has to be judged based on the original system, the module installed and the documentation of the work carried out. A non-original module may alter the certified configuration, so if your insurance terms require devices with a MABISZ recommendation (MABISZ is the Association of Hungarian Insurance Companies), we choose a factory module. If your insurer has requirements, we check the terms in advance and record the change at handover. It’s worth knowing that insurance terms look at the protection that was in operation at the time of the loss – so if the upgrade makes arming more convenient and you actually arm the system as a result, that in itself is a benefit.

What will replace my old mobile network transmitter?

We choose an IP or modern mobile network communicator that is compatible with the control panel and the monitoring provider. Whether a main and a back-up route are needed depends on the contract and technical requirements.

Does it work with Apple Home?

Few traditional alarms support it directly. Via Homey Pro (or a TapHome integration), some states can also be displayed in Apple Home. We check the supported functions and security limitations for each control panel.

My detectors are 15 years old. Shouldn’t they be replaced?

Not necessarily. Wired motion and opening detectors can last a long time; during the survey we test every zone and only recommend replacing parts that are faulty or no longer suitable for the level of protection you need.

How long does it take?

Upgrading a simple, documented and compatible control panel is often a few hours of on-site work. Resetting, reprogramming, expansion or complex integration takes longer; we set this out in the quote.

Can new detectors be added to the system at the same time?

Yes, if there is a free zone or the control panel has a compatible expander. We survey and price the missing points together with the upgrade.

Does the manufacturer’s app require a subscription?

It varies by manufacturer and solution. Any fees for the app, cloud service, SIM and alarm monitoring are listed separately in the quote.
